In collaboration with David Thorpe, author and co-founder of the One Planet Council, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is delighted to launch a new post-graduate certificate in ‘One Planet’ governance.
The PGCert One Planet Governance programme, the first of its kind in the world, is a Level 7 award that will provide a continual professional development opportunity for sustainable political, civic and public governance, administration and policymaking. Within the programme, students will study ethical and sustainable approaches to political leadership and administration, which will prepare them for the changing nature and role of politics and governance in the 21st century.
This new programme was officially launched at a special event held on the University’s Carmarthen campus today (May 22). The event was also an opportunity to launch David Thorpe’s new book, ‘One Planet’ Cities: Sustaining Humanity within Planetary Limits, which will feature as a key textbook for this new and exciting postgraduate certificate programme. A highly regarded international expert on sustainability issues, David Thorpe will also be a tutor on the new programme. Following the launch event, David commented:
“I was delighted to be invited to officially launch my new book here at Carmarthen Business School and to support the launch of the new and exciting One Planet Governance programme. My latest book is linked to my new campaign for cities to declare an ambition to reduce their ecological footprint as a response to the twinned climate and extinction emergencies, which I am running with the Global Footprint Network. It’s also a follow-up to my previous book The One Planet Life, which is a manual for what individuals and households can do to reduce their ecological footprint and live lightly on the earth.
This book will also be used as a key textbook for the new postgraduate certificate, which we have launched here today. This new postgraduate certificate is a world first and will help train the next generation of governmental, civic and civil leaders in the ways of thinking and tools required to take long-term strategic and holistic decisions in relation to governance.”
Dr Louise Emanuel, Programme Director for BA Business Management at the Carmarthen Business School added:
“We’re delighted to officially launch the new ‘One Planet’ Governance Post-graduate Certificate today. Our programmes have sustainable and ethical thinking at their core and this course will examine the nature of the long-term, strategic, ecological and social challenges facing the planet, and the fundamentally different new strategies and tools currently available and being developed to meet these challenges.
As a special feature of the course, students will undertake an in-depth study of the implementation and efficacy of the ground-breaking Welsh legislation, the Well-being of Future Generations Act. They will come to understand the interrelated challenges facing humanity, and life in general, on Earth, in relation to the planetary boundaries. They will then critically examine the tools, standards and methodologies implemented by different administrations around the world, across different sectors, in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals and ecological foot printing. They will focus on a chosen area as a practical case study.
The programme will be delivered through our online Virtual Learning Environment, where students will get access to all key learning activities, resources and their learning group using the latest interactive communications tools and applications.”
Welcoming David Thorpe to the University was Dr Jane Davidson, Pro Vice-Chancellor for External Engagement and Sustainability and Director of INSPIRE. She said:
“It was wonderful to have David Thorpe back on the Carmarthen campus once again. David is a valued author, journalist and inspirational speaker in the fields of ‘one planet’ living, low carbon energy and energy efficiency and it was a fantastic opportunity for our students and guests to hear more about David’s vital work.
I would urge everybody to go out and buy his new book. One of the key challenges for those of us who advocate living the One Planet Life is to sell the concept to our friends and families, neighbours and communities in a way that demonstrates a positive lifestyle change that enhances rather than diminish our and their quality of life. The community of people who want to live one-planet lives is growing daily across the world. Through social media, books, meetings, forums and real and virtual conversations, each lends tips and hints for better lifestyles. This new course will contribute to this ongoing discussion.”
